This tall silk kurotomesode showcases an exquisite yuzen-painted pair of elegant peacocks amidst peonies and bamboo grass, complemented by surihaku gold-foil outlining and five family crests (mon). Its measurements are 50 inches (127 cm) from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and a height of 65 inches (165 cm).
In Japanese legends, the peacock is revered for consuming poisonous snakes, averting natural disasters, and symbolizing immortality. Often depicted together in art, the peony and peacock share a connection, as the peony is considered "the king of flowers" in textile design, holding a non-seasonal status. Kurotomesode, (black tomesode), are frequently worn for wedding ceremonies by married female relatives of the bride or groom.
