A chirimen silk furisode featuring yuzen-painted bamboo, peonies and plum blossoms. Embroidery, couching and foil outlining. Five mon (family crests) so the most formal of kimonos. 52" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end by 59" height. Bamboo's endurance through the seasons has caused it to be associated with such virtues as constancy, integrity and honour, and is also a symbol of purity and nobility. The peony is the rose without thorns, and so embodies romance and love, and is regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage as well. This kimono would have worn by a young unmarried woman to a formal event, perhaps by a sister of the bride at a wedding.
