This omeshi woven silk haori is a distinctive example of mid-century Japanese craft, valued for its relatively thick, durable texture and sophisticated surface interest. The garment is rendered in a warm, chartreuse-yellow ground that features a rhythmic, horizontal "mist" or wave pattern in shades of moss-green and silver-grey.
The composition is dominated by a large-scale, all-over pattern of stylized autumnal leaves, possibly maple (momiji), which appear to float across the architectural field of the stripes. Each leaf is rendered with a dark, bold outline and filled with a complex internal gradient of grey and brown tones, mimicking the natural variegated colors of changing foliage. The omeshi technique—noted for using highly twisted threads—gives the fabric a characteristic "crispness" and a subtle matte finish that prevents the vibrant yellow from appearing overly reflective.
It's in very good condition, with minor imperfections, measuring 52 inches (132 cm) from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and standing at a height of 32 inches (81 cm).
