This sophisticated silk kimono showcases interlocking tortoise shell motifs crafted through an exceptionally fine shibori technique. Measuring 50 inches (127 cm) from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and standing at 60 inches (152 cm) tall, the six-sided hexagonal tortoise-shell motif, known as "kikko," abstractly represents the tortoise. In Japanese culture, the tortoise embodies a complex blend of beliefs from Hindu, Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist traditions. It's associated with exceptional longevity, a flowing white tail, and the exhalation of special vapors, evoking sacred jewels. Utilized on this kimono, the motif symbolizes the wish for a long life. Crafting these motifs through tie-dye involved countless knots, demanding many weeks of laborious and precise craftsmanship.
