A silk kimono featuring stenciled bamboo grass and tatewaku motifs. 49" from sleeve-end to sleeve end x 58" height. The tatewaku (rising steam) is a spring motif, symbolizing the steam rising from plants at the first spring heat. This motif is made of vertical, curvilinear lines which bulge and narrow to create an hourglass effect. The unusual non-traditional colour combinations on this kimono are akin to what would expect from a graphic artist of a later time period, and thus reflective of the groundbreaking experimentation of some early 20th century Japanese art.
