This bold rinzu (damask) silk kimono showcases stenciled fan motifs on a blue background, measuring 49 inches from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and standing 59 inches tall (124 cm x 150 cm). The multiple sensu (folding fans) in this design are termed "senmen chirashi" (scattered fan motifs). They provide a platform for Japanese artists to infuse subordinate themes into a larger design context, as seen here. In this example, the subordinate theme incorporates floral elements, including chrysanthemums and other auspicious flowers within most of the fans. The sinuous placement of the fans on the kimono canvas results in a striking and powerful graphic artwork. Kimonos like these, with innovative graphic interpretations of traditional motifs, are considered among the most exemplary works of Taisho-period kimono art.
