Large, stylized ume (plum) blossoms and bamboo leaves stand out dramatically against a dark background on this haori. The large blossom motifs are created using a rare embroidery technique (see detail images). The bamboo leaves are crafted by inserting fine flat gold metallic threads, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and adding a subtle shimmer to the garment. This technique not only highlights the leaves but also complements the plum blossoms, creating a harmonious balance between the two motifs.
The design shows similarities to the Rinpa school of Japanese painting, known for its stylized nature motifs and use of negative space. The bold, graphic quality of the floral and leaf patterns against the dark background also evokes Art Deco sensibilities, with its emphasis on geometric shapes and strong contrasts.
